This side table was inspired by the growth of bamboo and the rapid time that passes from shoot to fully mature stalks. Often unrefined and crude, I attempted to make a more explorative and modern take on bamboo furniture. I wanted to maintain the imperfections of the materials and accentuate their natural form. The table top visualizes the different stages of the same family of bamboo from older to younger cross-sections, cast entirely in resin.
All bamboo was sourced from my parents' garden.
Models / Material Tests
Being unfamiliar with resin, many tests were done in order to effectively cast the bamboo. The actual tabletop mold was a lathed medium density fiberboard form which was then vacuum formed with 3/16" sheet polyethylene.
